Murchison Falls National Park
Uganda's Largest National Park
The Strongest Waterfall in Africa, Kabalega Falls
Uganda's Largest National Park (nearly 4000square meters) takes its name from a narrow descending gap along river Nile. This is where the river literally thunders out to drop nearly 50 meters, making it the strongest water fall in Africa, dividing the park in half on its way to the Mediterranean Sea.
Often referred to as Kabalega Falls (in honor of the great King of Bunyoro) the sound is deafening. Endless sprays of water sting at the face even as your head gets pounded with the rhythm. It is easy to become emotional at the falls. The spectacle is a glorious tribute to the force of nature or perhaps kabalega's anger against the British colonialists.
The park is situated approximately 300km (190mi) by road, northwest of kampala, Uganda's capital city. There are camps and lodges to suit your every need and leave you with memories to last a lifetime. The 1951 Oscar winning movie, African Queen was filmed here.
Unforgettable Uganda Wildlife Safaris & The Big Five
Searching for the Big Five? It is at Murchison Falls National Park that you are assured a chance to meet many of them.
The African buffalo is one of the most social animals of the plains, but you won't miss the giant African elephants, the towering giraffes, the exorbitant hippopotamus, and cheerful antelopes like Uganda kobs, impalas, and waterbucks. And, of course, keep your eyes peeled for the king of the jungle: the lion.
Travelers can also watch beautiful butterflies as they emerge from their chrysalises, dry their wings, and prepare for their very first flight in the African sun.
Top Activities, Game Drives, Boat Cruises, and Birding
Arguably one of the most exciting national parks in East Africa, Murchison Falls gives visitors an opportunity to engage in a wide variety of activities.
World-Class Birding: With over 480 bird species including the spotted morning thrush, silverbird, buff-bellied warbler, red-breasted bee-eater, yellow-breasted apalis, and varieties of kingfishers, birders consider this park a paradise. With their loud chirping sounds and vibrant colors, these tropical birds add graceful movement as they streak across the skies.
River Nile Boat Cruise: You may enjoy a game drive, birding, and primate viewing in the nearby Budongo Forest, but few experiences can match a boat ride to the bottom of Murchison Falls. Today, this boat cruise has become an essential part of the Murchison Falls experience. It is a wonderful way to safely see hippos, buffaloes, and Nile crocodiles at ease along the riverbanks.
Cultural Encounters: Visitors are always entertained by local cultural troupes at the entrance and exit of Murchison Falls National Park. Don't miss a photo moment or getting a keepsake to remind you of this incredible journey.
